The 11th INSME Annual Meeting is approaching: INSME and OSIBA Management are looking forward to welcoming all of you at Cape Town!

The 11th INSME Annual Meeting is approaching and numerous international delegates will reach South Africa to share ideas and discuss future trends on "Technology and Innovation for Inclusive Growth" in just one month time. This year’s event will take place from the 26th to the 28th of May 2015 and is held in conjunction with Forging Enterprise, a major national event to celebrate the 20th anniversary from the launch of the South Africa’s small business policy by former President Nelson Mandela.

In addition to the Round Tables and the International Conference on days 26th and 27th of May, the 28th of May will be dedicated to a stimulating Innovation Tour which will offer participants the opportunity to visit the Launch Lab and the Barn, two (South) African Innovation Excellences. The afternoon offers the occasion to take part in the interactive INSME & OSIBA International Training on "Frugal Innovation in the Context of Social Entrepreneurship" organized at the Cape Town Craft and Design Institute. Mr. Rajat Batra from STENUM Asia and Mr. Lars Iversen from Springfellow will analyze the necessity to create and foster a new ecosystem in which Startup companies and entrepreneurs might "gain access to capital and exploit local and national synergies in cooperation with established businesses as well as the public sector". The International Expert Training is also the occasion to gain insights from a case study of a local young entrepreneur involved in the field of Social Entrepreneurship. The intensive afternoon session will end with an interactive space in which relators and participants will share opinions and ideas on the following questions:

  • How can innovation help social enterprises increase impact?

How Big Ideas Are Built?

Big ideas do not occur to us spontaneously, our minds build them from a chain of associations and connections, often over a considerable period of time.

Albert Einstein for example reinvented physics by introducing the relativity theory after thinking about it for at least seven years.

According to the author of the article, Mr. Rowan Gibson to come up to with a big idea we need a creative process built on an illuminating insight into a situation or a problem that inspires an unexpected leap of association in the mind. This helps to have new perspectives and to find new connections which enable combinations that may manifest themself as big ideas or creative solutions.

  • Find a mentor for each area of expertise
  • Seek mentors who are willing to mentor and which want to be involved in the business’ mission
  • Look for mentors who contradict each other, to have different perspectives.

About IPR…in China

E-commerce brand protection in China

According to this article by the China IPR SME Helpdesk (INSME Partner), internet has become a popular channel for product distribution around the world, but it can also be used to distribute counterfeit goods which infringe intellectual property rights. A company should safeguard its business in China by following a three-step strategy: registering rights, monitoring e-commerce sites and if necessary requesting take-downs of counterfeit or infringing goods.

Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India 2015

According to the latest outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India 2015 published by the OECD Development Centre and the ASEAN Secretariat, growth prospects look favorable overall in Emerging Asia over the medium term. The large ASEAN-5 economies (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam) will sustain their growth momentum, particularly led by Indonesia and the Philippines with an average annual growth of 6.0 and 6.2 respectively over 2015-2019. China and India face significant challenges: China’s growth is slowing as it seeks to adjust to an ageing population, switches its growth focus from investment to consumption and copes with agricultural, environmental and educational issues. India’s growth should be stable over 2015-2019, but this could change as the new government carries out ambitious plans for investments and reforms.

Generally, improved government capacity as well as reforms to improve competitiveness, education and inclusive and sustainable growth are needed to achieve policy goals more consistently.

Plans to cope with the informal sector are needed as well as it limits the reach of government and lowers productivity levels.

Going Global. Promoting the Internationalization of Small and Medium Enterprises in Latin American and Caribbean

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are notably underrepresented in LAC’s international transactions despite their importance as the backbone of LAC economies and a source of employment for millions of people. SMEs constitute more than 95% of the region’s companies, but only 13% of these firms engage in exports. In addition, LAC SMEs that do export tend to sell only a few products to a rather reduced number of markets. These figures highlighted the potential for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that would gain significant growth by fostering SMEs internationalization, particularly by focusing on SMEs with a strong potential to succeed in international markets.

This report issued by the Inter-American Development Bank seeks to suggest tools to support and accelerate SMEs internationalization in the region. The findings strongly suggest that a paradigm shift is needed. LAC should leave behind isolated support mechanisms that may or may not put SMEs’ priorities at the forefront and embrace a holistic and coordinated set of national economic and trade policies along with managerial and operational practices within SMEs and targeted institutional innovations.
