META Group: Innovation Lab and TAKE IT UP news

META Group D.o.o., within the framework of the Innovation Lab initiative, is organizing the workshop "Ready to Use" Venture Capital Funds. How to set up and launch financial engineering measures using ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), (30th September 2011 in Brussels, Belgium).

It is addressed to civil servants and innovation intermediary company managers, for disseminating innovative tools and management tips in the domains of Entrepreneurship, Finance, Technology transfer and Clustering.

TAKE IT UP, Europe INNOVA promotion pillar – a project coordinated by META Group s.r.l., has rendered available two new papers:

  • "The eligibility of RDAs, Cluster Organisations and other Regional Intermediary Organisations for EU Funding Programmes supporting Entrepreneurship, R&D and Innovation", drafted with the view to collect ideas on how EU instruments could be better used by European intermediary organisations in the next programming period and to help them to build synergies between different programmes.
  • "Non Technology Innovation & Service Innovation and the use of Structural Funds", with the objective to investigate how European regional actors have included other drivers of innovation than R&D in the programming and disbursement of structural funds with a focus on non-technological innovation processes. It also includes key results from the TAKE IT UP survey presented at the Europe INNOVA KIS Partnering Forum 2011 in Warsaw.

EBN: 20th EBN Annual Congress & RETIS Annual Congress outreaches

Around 300 participants among European BIC Network- EBN members and partners, EU officials, innovation stakeholders, start-ups, SMEs & large enterprises as well as academic and knowledge players attended the 20th EBN Annual Congress & RETIS Annual Congress on "Creative Innovation, Inspired Entrepreneurs, Smart Growth".

The Congress represented an international arena to showcase experiences about digital and state-of-the-art creative tools, to explore and deliver new services by using advanced digital technologies.

EU: Consultation on a new European regime for venture capital

The European Commission launched on the 15th June 2011 this consultation to find the best possible approach in order to achieve a real internal market for venture capital funds in the EU. This initiative will collect contributes from EU citizens and organizations and in particularly from investors, asset managers, SMEs and public authorities.

EU: Conference on the Common Strategic Framework for EU research and innovation funding: videos now available

On the 10th June 2011 the Conference on the Common Strategic Framework for EU research and innovation funding took place in Brussels (Belgium). It featured high-level speakers from the European Commission, science organisations, universities, entrepreneurs and governments from across Europe and beyond.

EU: Public Consultation on Green Paper – responses

The European Commission published a Report with a summary analysis of the consultation concerning the Green Paper on a Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation Funding.

The consultation collected more than 1300 responses through the online questionnaire and 775 position papers received. The outcomes are being used to design the proposals, to be presented by the Commission by the end of 2011, for a legislative decision of the Council and Parliament on the Common Strategic Framework.

NOTAP – Nigeria

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and PromotionNOTAP is a governmental agency under the aegis of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Science and Technology established on 1979 as the National Office of Industrial Property (NOIP) and become in 1992, to National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP).

NOTAP provides technology related services to industries, entrepreneurs, researchers, inventors and innovators in the areas of technology transfer agreements; IPRs promotion; provision of the state of the art technology information; commercialisation of research and development results; research-industry linkage; monitoring, consultancy and extension services; technology advisory services etc.

NOTAP is an INSME Member since mid 2011.

2nd Biotech Start Up Challenge

Organisers: AIFI-Italian Association of Private Equity and Venture Capital and PLG Italy - Pharma Licensing Group Italy

Event: "Biotech 2011" to be held in Milan, Italy on 5th -7th October 2011

Aim: to identify top technologies, products, services start up.

Applicants: startups from around the World which meets the following eligibility requirements:

1) being a not older than 3 years company;

2) developing innovative products/services in red/green/white biotech;

3) having less than 15 employees.

Competition rules: through 6 minutes presentation slots, plus 3 Q&A minutes, start ups will have the opportunity to capture the attention of investors, entrepreneurs and members of the innovation system. Presentations will be evaluated and voted by a panel of judges (venture capitalists, biotech companies executives, licensing managers and intellectual property attorneys) which will score companies as they pitch to an audience of investors, entrepreneurs, technology executives and members of the media.

Prize: along with immediate feedback from the judges, the winner will be offered a chance to participate for free in the 2012 edition of Biotech.

Interesting Initiatives

Training for SMEs internationalization - GlobaliSME

The GlobaliSME "Training for SMEs internationalization" is an innovation transfer project funded by the Leonardo da Vinci Programme of the European Commission.

This initiative aims to understand the state of the art as far as training and support services for internationalization are concerned in the transferee countries and, in particular:

1) the perceived training needs of SMEs in Hungary and Cyprus related to internationalization, not matched by existing offers;

2) SMEs' requirements concerning delivery methodologies and approaches for training;

3) the point of view of Hungarian and Cypriot stakeholders and policy makers.

The project will end on 31st August 2012.

EU: Innovation Union Competitiveness Report 2011

The European Commission recently published its 2011 Innovation Union Competitiveness Report.

The Report, builds on the Innovation Union Scoreboard, includes a factsheet detailing each country's research and innovation performance and provides solid facts on which to base European and national policy choices to build efficient research and innovation systems and turn the EU into a true "Innovation Union".

UNCTAD-OECD: Fifth UNCTAD-OECD Report on G20 Investment Measures and Joint Summary by WTO-OECD-UNCTAD on G20 Trade and Investment Measures

The UNCTAD-OECD Report on G20 Investment Measures concludes that the majority of the G20 countries' national policy measures undertaken during the reporting period eliminated restrictions on international investment and/or improved clarity for foreign investors.

The Report covers measures taken in the period from mid-October 2010 until end-April 2011 and it is accompanied by the Joint WTO-OECD-UNCTAD Summary on G20 Trade and Investment Measures, issued in response to the request made by G20 leaders at their summit meeting in Seoul (Korea) on 11th -12th November 2010.

In their Summit declaration, the G20 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to resisting protectionism until the end of 2013, and asked WTO, OECD and UNCTAD to continue monitoring the situation and to report publicly on a semi-annual basis.

The Innovation Union Information and Intelligence System (I3S), launched by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), is a web-based platform for all Innovation Union stakeholders. It provides detailed information on each of the 34 Innovation Union Commitments presented the Commission's Innovation Union communication of October 2010. Several of these commitments concern or are related with Intellectual Property.

In the near future this platform will be complemented with another platform focused on the research and innovation policies in the EU Member States, Associated Countries and several third countries.
