The beginning of the year is the right time to make good resolutions and plan new initiatives. Our main wish is that the INSME Association continues to grow while maintaining the close, individual relationships we have with our 75 Members based in 31 countries in 5 Continents.
This month, our main goal is to provide readers with updated information and news related to SME innovation and competitiveness at international level to expand your vision and improve your business through new opportunities and benefits across the world. The major event of our Association for this year is the 6th INSME Annual Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (10-13 May, 2010): SME Innovation: boosting development and growth in times of change.
Enjoy our reading in 2010 and, please, send us your opinion, contribution and suggestions to enrich and improve our ongoing work to support innovation intermediaries and their networking and mutual learning.

EU RTDI to map funding opportunities for research and innovation |
CORDIS, the European Community Information Service on Research and Development, has published a mind map to help beneficiaries (i.e. research bodies, enterprises, policy makers, etc) of the EU funding opportunities for research, technological development and innovation to identify the most suitable tools for participating. The map can also help decision-makers to identify potential synergies between different types of funding schemes available in the European Union's research, technology, development and innovation (EU RTDI) programmes. The mind map is complementary to the "Practical Guide to EU funding opportunities for research and innovation".

Published results of the public consultation on the EU innovation policy |
The European Council called for the elaboration of a new European Innovation Plan (EIP) to contribute to the competitiveness of the EU industry and to foster economic recovery. To this end, a public consultation was launched on 16 September 2009 and 215 responses where received, by mid November, from 35 countries, among which 11 are non-EU countries. Among the main results, it has emerged a need for:
Further simplification and streamlining of EU funding programmes;
Better cooperation, coordination and complementarities among regional, national and EU innovation programmes;
Improving synergies between research, innovation and education policies;
Stronger focus on SMEs and facilitating their access to funding programmes;
Orientating innovation policies towards major societal challenges, such as climate change and ageing;
Reinforcing innovation in public services.
The summary of responses can be found here. The responses will provide a valuable input for the preparation of the future EU innovation policy that is due to be presented by Spring 2010.

This report, adopted by the EC on 15 December 2009, summarises the progress achieved in 2009, which has been the first full year of implementation of the SBA, focussing mainly on the measures contained in the SBA Action Plan and in the European Economic Recovery Plan. In order to ensure an efficient implementation of the SBA at European and national levels, the Commission's prior objective is to reduce administrative burdens for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The proposal on reduced VAT rates entered into force on 1 June 2009 and offers the Member States ample possibilities to boost economic activity notably in labour-intensive services.
