Updates on the life of the International Network for SMEs

INSME is strengthening its linkages with international organisations:

  • In July 2007 the Association was designated as an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.

  • APEC SME Innovation Center, based in Seoul, Korea, will become an INSME Member starting October 2007.

  • The INSME Secretariat will present INSME activities and achievements at the upcoming session of the OECD Working Party on SMEs and Entrepreneurship, to be held in Paris in mid November, also with a view to ask for the OECD moral sponsorship renewal.

INSME monthly newsletter is going to be available in Spanish from now on, thanks to the contribution from its Italian Member, ABCnet. The Spanish edition will be issued about one week after the English version.

   Chinese investments in R&D

According to a recent report on innovation policy in China carried out by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), the country needs further reforms in research and development (R&D) and higher education to enhance its innovation-oriented economy.

Looking ahead, China should invest in skilled workers in science and technology, improving the quality of science education with more emphasis on managerial expertise and entrepreneurship, despite China has currently more researchers than any other country except the United States.

The Business Value of Intellectual Property (World Growth)

A new study finds that two-thirds of the value of American large manufacturers comes from intellectual property, mainly in the form of patents and trademarks. IP-intensive firms greatly outperform their counterparts. The report concludes by recommending that policymakers do a better job protecting US-based IP as these assets represent a critical competitive advantage for American manufacturers.
