Second International Training Course on Management of Innovation and Technology Transfer, Buenos Aires (Argentina), July 5-8, 2005

Dear INSMEnews Readers,

as many of you, the INSME Secretariat's staff is about to take a break for the Summer holidays, but not before updating you on our Network's activities!

The most important update concerns the INSME 2006 Annual Meeting whose call for co-hosting and co-organising this 3-day event has just expired. Once again, we thank all the Member and non-Member organisations that submitted their candidature. We remind you that the final decision about the place and date for the INSME 2006 Annual Meeting will be taken by the INSME Board in September, following an accurate evaluation of all proposals after a screening process from the INSME Secretariat.

A second update relates to membership in the INSME Association, which keeps on growing. The European Finance Convention Foundation has just joined the Network and, with this new organisation, INSME now has 68 Members. We are very happy with this result, which is extremely encouraging for the future development of this young Association. We are confident to receive applications from other organisations from all over the world at the resumption of work in early September. Contacts we have established on the occasion of our latest training programmes and of the events in which INSME has been actively involved are very promising in this regard.

We invite you to take advantage of this networking activity and remind you all that, whether you are an INSME Member or not, you can always benefit from and contribute to the online initiatives that support our Network, including this newsletter. So feel free to share the information included in it or send us news, information and comments on any issue related to innovation and technology transfer to SMEs. We also encourage you to recommend those newsletters dealing with the same issues relevant to INSME and its Members so that we can become subscribed to them and consequently stay thoroughly tuned into your field of interest.

We will get back to you in September with new ideas and proposals and look forward to evermore knowledge sharing among us!

Ms. Simona Marzetti

INSME Association Secretary General

News from the INSME Members
UNCTAD to create science and technology network in developing countries

UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) is launching an initiative to set up a network of centres of excellence on science and technology in developing countries, as announced at a meeting of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) at the end of May. The Italian Government has expressed his willingness to initially fund this project with a US$ 500,000 grant.

Existing centres of excellence that already possess adequate infrastructure and critical mass in their scientific and technological R&D work will be selected for inclusion in the network. There are currently over 100 science and technology institutions.

The idea is to turn the centres of excellence into regional hubs that can conduct joint research in areas of importance to developing countries, reversing the negative impact of "brain drain" by producing researchers able to tackle their countries challenges. The network should also enhance the capacity of developing countries to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

INSME's Interviews
Interview with Mr. Mario Cardullo (U.S. Department of Commerce)

Mr. Mario Cardullo is Counsellor for Technology and Entrepreneurship within the International Trade Administration of the US Department of Commerce. He has a wealth of experience in entrepreneurism and venture capital: he has established and successfully financed 3 technological enterprises and been a venture capitalist himself.

In this interview, given on the occasion of the INSME International Conference in Barcelona (13-15 April 2005) where he was one of the speakers, he brings a very clear understanding of the success of the US economic system in the last decade, with respect to other systems of comparable development, and provides a few fundamentals of the US venture capital industry.

His views are an unusual blend of idealism and values on the one hand and realism and numbers on the other. That's why you will certainly find it interesting!
