IPRs and SME Performance in the EU: Higher Revenues and Wages for Enterprises owing IPRs

March, 2, 2021

A new Intellectual Property contribution Report has been issued in the early months of 2021 and results from a joint effort by the EPO and the EUIPO.

The report targets innovating companies owning an IP portfolio; it compares them with their competitors which do not possess an equal set of IPRs. The investigation has been performed on a sample of over 127,000 firms within the 28 EU member states, as of January 2020.

The contribution shows how enterprises owing IPRs succeed in generating higher revenues. On the other hand, those enterprises shall also increase their wages which resulted in being 19% higher than those paid by companies which do not possess an IP portfolio.

This study represents a further confirmation of the positive economic performances resulting from undertakings owing IPRs. That was found even more true in case of small-medium enterprises. Indeed, only 9% of EU SMEs use IPRs but those are also able to generate 68% higher revenues per employee, in comparison with other SMEs which do not make use of them.
